The paper density of a type of paper or cardboard is the mass of the product per unit of area. The term density here is used somewhat incorrectly, as density is mass by volume. More precisely, "paper density" is a measure of the area density.
Two ways of expressing paper density are commonly used:
Expressed in grams per square metre (g/m2), paper density is also known as grammage.[1] This is the measure used in most parts of the world.
Expressed in terms of the mass (in pounds) of a ream of 500 (or in some cases 1000) sheets of a given (raw, still uncut) basis size, paper density is known as basis weight. The base size and area used here depends on the product type. This convention is used in the United States, and (to a lesser degree) in a very small number of other countries that use United States paper sizes. Japanese paper is expressed as the weight in kg of 1000 sheets.[1]

Grammage
In the metric system, the density of all types of paper and paperboard is expressed in terms of grams per square metre (g/m2). This quantity is commonly called grammage in both English and French (ISO 536), though printers in most English-speaking countries still refer to the "weight" of paper.
Typical office paper has 80g/m2, therefore a typical A4 sheet (1?16 m2) weighs 5g.
The unofficial unit symbol "gsm" instead of the standard "g/m2" is also widely encountered in English speaking countries.
While paper is measured by weight, card is measured by thickness in micrometres.[citation needed]
Basis weight
In countries that use United States paper sizes, a less direct measure known as basis weight is used in addition to or instead of grammage. The basis weight of paper is the density of paper expressed in terms of the mass of a ream of given dimensions and a sheet count. In the US system, the weight is specified in avoirdupois pounds and the sheet count of a paper ream is usually 500 sheets. However, the mass specified is not the mass of the ream that is sold to the customer. Instead, it is the mass of the uncut "basis ream" in which the sheets have some larger size. Often, this is a size used during the manufacturing process before the paper was cut to the dimensions in which it is sold. So, to compute the mass per area, one must know
the mass of the basis ream,
the number of sheets in that ream, and
the dimensions of an "uncut" sheet in that ream.
The standard dimensions and sheet count of a ream vary according to the type of paper. These "uncut" basis sizes are not normally labelled on the product, are not formally standardized, and therefore have to be guessed or inferred somehow from trading practice. Historically, this convention is the product of pragmatic considerations such as the size of a sheet mold.
By using the same basis sheet size for the same type of paper, consumers can easily compare papers of differing brands. 20 pound bond paper is always lighter and thinner than 32 pound bond, no matter what its cut size. And 20 pound bond letter size and 20 pound bond legal size papers are the same weight paper having different cut size.
However, a sheet of common copy paper that has a basis weight of 20 pounds does not have the same mass as the same size sheet of coarse paper (newsprint). In the former case, the standard ream is 500 sheets of 17 by 22-inch (560mm) paper, and in the latter, 500 sheets of 24 by 36-inch (910mm) paper. Here are some basic ream sizes for various types of paper. Units are inches except where noted.

So, the 17 by 22-inch (560mm) ream became commonly used. The 25 by 38-inch (970mm) book-paper ream developed because such a size can easily be cut into sixteen 6 by 9-inch (230mm) book-sized sheets without significant waste.

Typical Motorola plug found on consumer auto accessory antenna coaxial cables
A Motorola connector is a common coaxial cable RF connector used primarily in the automotive industry for connecting the coaxial feedline from the antenna to the radio receiver. It is also sometimes used for connecting scanner antennas to scanners. The male plug somewhat resembles an RCA connector in size and shape, but instead of being concentric to the pin, the sleeve is "folded" back over the coax.
The pin is soldered to the center conductor of the coaxial cable coming from the antenna, and the grounded side forms a 1.5 inch (38 mm) long sleeve around the coax. The sleeve usually contains one or more longitudinal spring surfaces, which provide reliable electrical contact by wiping against the mating female socket.

Career
After hearing one of his songs, M.I.A. approached Pentz when he was DJing one night at the Fabric Club in London. "Besides me being a white dude from Florida and her being a Sri Lankan girl in England, everything else was the same: [We were both] film graduates, [listened to] all the same music when we were kids, were going in the same direction right now in music, it was amazing."[4] he said of their meeting. Coincidentally, Diplo was playing her single "Galang" as she entered the club, which he got from a worker at i-D magazine.[4] Diplo also toured as M.I.A.'s DJ during her 2005 Arular Tour. He has also worked with fellow Philadelphians Spank Rock, Amanda Blank and Santogold.
He released a full-length solo effort, Florida in 2004.
Born in Mississippi and raised across the southern United States, Diplo picked up much of the local culture.[5] Baile Funk or Funk Carioca is a special interest for Diplo, which he encountered while DJing at a house party with Hollertronix and he has used for sampled beats in numerous productions.[4]
Diplo can be attributed with playing a key role in bringing the musical genre funk carioca from Brazil to the United States. After traveling to Rio de Janeiro and experiencing the music first hand in 2004, he released a number of baile funk mixes, such as Favela on Blast: Rio Baile Funk 2004 and Favela Strikes Back, which introduced Funk to some listeners in America. He later went on to co-author the mixtape Piracy Funds Terrorism Vol. 1 with M.I.A, an underground success which included some Baile funk themes.[6] Diplo is additionally in the post-production stage of producing a documentary on Baile Funk, entitled Favela on Blast, which he hopes will continue to bring attention to the genre. [7]
In 2006, Diplo wrote a blog post on Maya saying
All you little fuckers...M.I.A. came out of nowhere and tore all your asses upside down made music that was interesting for DJs that wasn't completely hollow...all you fuckers who sit home and talk shit and don't actually put your heart on the line everyday as a musician need to eat shit. Peace.[8]
In 2006, he started his own label, Mad Decent, signing Brazilian baile funk group Bonde do Role, DJ Blaqstarr. Pentz has been involved in social relief projects, and in 2007, started the Heaps Decent Project with partners Andrew Levins and Nina Agzarian, following gigs on the Winter 2006 Big Day Out festival tour. Work has included recording songs with inmates at a juvenile detention centre with M.I.A. and he has expressed interest in taking the project to other countries.[citation needed] Diplo is signed to the Ninja Tune imprint Big Dada. He has gone on to remix and work with other artists.
He attended the University of Central Florida and Temple University in Philadelphia. He has also toured with Switch and Justice. He is also set to release an album collaboration with Switch, recorded in Jamaica (as Major Lazer) which has been in production for over a year.[9] He is currently touring throughout 2008.
Diplo is just one of 9 artists who participated in thetruth.com鎶 Remix Project, where he remixed the Sunny Side song "Typo".

Notable Performances; First in the UK 'Round the Island' race non-IOR against 700 yachts. First in Tomatin Triohy as scratch boat giving J 24's nearly 2 min's an hour handicap advantage.
Accommodation
With a wide beam and a long waterline length equal to that of a ? tonne yacht the North 26 is comparitably a big volume boat for its length. But is definitely not a 鎱簂oating caravan as its performance attests.
The standard layout has two separate cabins plus a separate toilet compartment. The forward cabin contains a full length V- berth. The main salon has a full length settee on the starboard side with deep lockers above, below the deck. A quarter berth extends beneath the cockpit on the same side. On the port side is the galley with built in two burner spirit stove, a sink and a deep icebox beside the companionway. A folding table can be hinged from the centre board case with a short settee on the port side. An alternative layout would allow for two full length settees and two quarter berths with the galley above the port side and the use of a portable icebox.
This boat can cruise comfortably with four adults and accommodate 5 or 6 people when need be, say after a race.
Number of crew to race = 4 or 5, Berths = 5 or 6, Galley =provision for 2 burner stove and sink, portable icebox. Water bladder. Head = portable in separate compartment, Navigation =in salon, Maximum headroom = 5.5 ft, 1.75 m, to standard plan. But 5 ft 11 in (1.88 m) in versions where 5 inches (125 mm) added to the hull freeboard, allows full standing headroom for most people.
Special features
Outboard motor housed in locker with bomb-bay doors at companionway. Doors close up when sailing. Hydraulic operated keel lifting. Keel can be bolted down when racing.
The halyards and sheets lead back to the companionway for central control including mainsail furling, two winches located on the cabin top and two on the side decks handle all tasks. The mast design chosen avoids the need for running backstays, as these are definitely a hindrance and safety problem when cruising short handed.
A deep anchor locker is provided in the bow, ample room for an electric winch. When the outboard is lowered in its bridge-deck well, the propeller is on the centreline of the boat and well forwards of the stern, so that even in rough conditions the prop will not come out of the water, a problem with stern mounted outboards. When not in use the outboard is out of the way and protected without the need for heavy lifting and removal each trip.
Towable with large 4 WD of about 4 litres, depending on local transport regulations.
Construction
Country of origin, UK
Hull material, design for Ply, Aluminium or Fibreglass. Multichine for ease of amateur construction. The boat is built inverted for ease of access, using fabricated ply or aluminium frames. To minimise ply wastage and enable quick fit out the bulkheads form part of the furniture. There is no need for full size patterns as each frame is fully dimensioned on the drawings. Usage
Fibre cement is a composite material made of sand, cement and cellulose fibers. In appearance fibre cement cladding most often consists of overlapping horizontal boards, imitating wooden cladding, clapboard and imitation shingles. Fiber cement siding is also manufactured in a sheet form and is used not only as cladding but is also commonly used as a soffit / eave lining and as a tile underlay on decks and in bathrooms.

CSR Fiber Cement sheet cladding - dwelling addition, Hardys Bay, NSW, Australia (Article)
Fiber cement cladding is not only used as an exterior cladding, it can also be utilised as a substitute for timber fascias and barge boards in high fire areas.
Specifications
Fibre cement sheeting products are manufactured in Australia by CSR, BGC and James Hardie in accordance with Australian Standard 2908.2000, "Cellulose Cement Products". Fiber cement siding and sheeting is produced in the United States by CertainTeed Corporation. In Europe, these products are manufactured and marketed by Eternit.
Sheet sizes vary slightly from manufacture to manufacture but generally they range between 2400 3000 mm in length and 900 1200mm in width (600 & 450 mm increments). This manufactured size minimises on-site wastage as residential floor, wall and roof structures lay structural members at 450 or 600 centres.
Fibre cement thicknesses vary between 4.5-18mm and also vary in density the lower density resulting in a fibrous rough edge when cut and the higher density having a cleaner smoother edge when cut.
Thermal resistance and sound transmission vary greatly between fiber cement products. Fiber cement sheet products rate poorly in thermal resistance and sound transmission and separate wall insulation is highly recommended. Generally the thicker and denser the product the better resistance it will have to temperature and sound transmission.
Installation
Fibre cement cladding is a very heavy product and requires two people to carry the uncut sheets. Thin fibre cement cladding is fragile before installation and must be handled carefully; it is prone to chipping and breakage if improperly handled.
Once the product is cut it may again require two people to install one to hold the sheet flush against studwork and the other to nail the product in place.
Cutting fibre cement cladding sheeting usually requires a mechanised saw or metal hand shears and sheets can be cut to size in three ways:
Thinner sheets can be scored with a heavy duty cutting blade and snapped
Purpose made "fibro cutter" (an Australian term)
Thicker and denser sheets require cutting by a mechanical saw
Some caution must be exercised to properly ventilate areas where FCS is being cut; long-term exposure to the silica dust generated during the installation process can cause silicosis.
Fibre cement cladding can be painted before or after installation. (For areas of exposure, weatherproof paint must be used.) Once the product is fixed the joints are usually covered with timber battens and the entire wall surface is painted.

Detail - timber battens on fibre cement cladding, dwelling addition, Hardys Bay, NSW, Australia (Article)
History
Fibre cement products came about as a replacement for the widely used "Asbestos Cement Sheeting" product manufactured by "James Hardie" until the late 1980s.
Durability
The external cladding products require very little maintenance once installed and painted. The thicker/denser fiber cement products have excellent impact resistance but the thinner less dense products need to be protected from impact.
Fire Resistance
Fibre cement cladding is a non combustible material which is widely used in high bush fire prone areas throughout Australia . Pictured above is CSRs' Fiber Cement cladding 鎱檌nea board which has been substituted for the traditional timber fascia and barge board materials.
Alternatives
Competitors to fiber cement cladding are imitation clapboard include vinyl, PVC, wood composite products and aluminum siding. Compared to wooden siding, fiber cement is not susceptible to termites or rot.

A typical copper foil Tiffany lamp, with a jonquil daffodil design
Lead came and Copper foil glasswork are the arts and crafts of cutting colored glass and joining the pieces into picturesque designs.
The traditional method uses lead came. This is the method used for centuries in Europe, mainly in Religious buildings such as cathedrals, churches and monasteries, and including wealthy or aristocratic homes.
An alternative method, replacing the lead came with copper foil, was invented in the 19th century, enabling creation of three-dimensional works, in addition to two-dimensional ones to which the lead came method is limited. The copper foil artwork is commonly called Tiffany stained glass, even though there is a debate about whether John La Farge or Louis Comfort Tiffany invented this alternative to lead came glasswork.

Overview
In both lead came and copper foil glasswork, cut pieces of stained glass are joined together in a framework of lead.
In the lead came method the pieces of glass are embedded into the channels of the came, and the joints between the came strips soldered together.
In the copper foil method, the edges of the glass pieces are wrapped with adhesive copper tape, and soldered together along the adjacent copper strips.
The process

The steps in creation of Lead Came and Copper Foil Glasswork
Design
The first step for both techniques is to create a design on paper. This draft must consider constraints such as reduction of buckling risk, overall structural integrity, limiting the convergence of lead lines, and cuttability of each piece of glass within.
The next step is to make a template copy of the design for cutting the glass. The width of the lead came or the copper foil that separates the pieces of glass may be compensated for with double blade pattern shears that remove a thin strip of material on the template copy.
For large designs, a scale model may be made, which is digitally photographed and further modified with AutoCAD. After measurements and other notations are applied, the full pattern is printed on a large-format printer.
Transferring the design to glass
Four methods may be employed.
The cut paper may be glued to the glass before cutting it
The cut paper to may be pressed against the glass and its outline traced on the glass with a marker.
The pattern may be affixed to a light box or light source. Sheet glass is placed over the pattern, and traced with a marker.
The edge of the pattern piece may be followed with the cutter.
Cutting the glass
The glass is scored using a steel or carbide wheel glass cutter lubricated with cutting oil. Glass is broken at the score using breaker-grozier pliers, running pliers or built in groziers on a traditional glass cutter. This works because glass breaks along its weakest point when it bends. The ball end on many glass cutters is used to break complicated cuts in a piece of glass. Tapping the ball end along the score on the opposite side of the glass sends a vibration through the glass that helps it break along the score. Also, the notches in most basic glass cutters can be used to grab small bits of glass for breaking.
Grinding the cut glass
At this stage, the cut glass pieces have sharp edges and inaccuracies in their shape. The glazier can use an electric glass grinder with a diamond-coated grinding wheel to smooth the glass pieces, or a carborundum stone.
Glass saws
An alternative to the cutting and grinding steps is the use of a ring saw or band saw. Such saws permit the cutting of shapes impossible with a wheel cutter.
This is where the processes for each of the two methods split. The next section describes the steps for the lead came method. The equivalent copper foil steps are described in the copper foiling section below.

An antistatic floor mat or ground mat is one of a number of antistatic devices designed to help eliminate static electricity. It does this by having a conductive material embedded within the mat that collects the static. The mat would need to be grounded (earthed). This is usually accomplished by plugging into the grounded line in an electrical outlet. It's important to discharge at a slow rate, therefore a resistor should be used in earthing the mat. Some ground mats allow you to connect an antistatic wrist strap to them.

The top of a Wii Balance Board

The bottom of a Wii Balance Board
The Wii Balance Board is shaped like a household body scale, with a plain white top and light gray bottom. It runs on four AA batteries as a power source, which can power the board for about 60 hours.[3] The board is wireless and contains multiple pressure sensors that are used to measure the user's center of balance姊﹉e location of the intersection between an imaginary line drawn vertically through the center of mass and the surface of the Balance Board姊恘d body mass index. In an interview conducted by gaming web site IGN, Shigeru Miyamoto stated that the Balance Board's ability to measure weight is probably more accurate than that of a typical bathroom scale.[4]
Although the Japanese packaging states that it is designed to support people weighing up to 136kilograms (300pounds) and the "Western" Balance Board up to 150kg (330pounds), they are actually the same board. The packaging differs due to regulatory differences between Japan and the United States. The sensors on the board can accurately measure up to 150kg (330pounds). The actual physical structure of the board can withstand much greater force equivalent to around 300kg (660pounds).[5]
Due to the similarities between the two products, the Wii Balance Board has been compared to the Joyboard, a peripheral released for the Atari VCS in 1982 by Amiga Corporation.[6] The technology in the Joyboard was less advanced than that in the Wii Balance Board,[6] however.
It is noted in the manual that the Balance Board should only be used on a hard surface or thin carpet, as thicker or softer surfaces can cause the board to fail to behave correctly. A set of feet extensions is included to allow the board to be used on softer surfaces. The extension feet are not included in the European versions of the balance board but may be purchased by the consumer at a cost of GBP?8.50.
The balance board must be used barefooted for it to work. Socks do not properly grip the hard surface and can be dangerous. Members of Club Nintendo were able to receive novelty Wii Fit non-skid socks, which use small rubber pads which stick to surfaces.
Development
The balance board's development was tightly coupled with the development of the Wii Fit game. Nintendo initially contacted manufacturers of normal bathroom scales, but ended up building the board without their help in an effort to keep down costs. In early development models, the balance board was a simple scale with one pressure sensor. However, the developers realized that a simple scale was not useful as a game accessory and expanded the number of pressure sensors to two, then four. The idea to use multiple sensors was partly inspired by how sumo wrestlers weigh themselves (using two scales).[7] The shape of the balance board was initially a square, but it was decided that it was too hard to use for the exercises.
For a long time, the board was an extension controller to a normal Wii remote.[7]
Software
Wii Fit was the first game to make use of the Wii Balance Board. Shigeru Miyamoto noted the potential for other uses, however, noting that "probably the simplest and most straightforward [idea] would be a snowboarding game".[8] Miyamoto has also stated that Nintendo has received "many inquiries" from third parties following the announcement of Wii Fit and the Wii Balance Board,[9] as well as receiving interest from the physical fitness industry.[9]
We Ski by Namco Bandai Holdings was the first third-party game to make use of the Wii Balance Board, in conjunction with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk attachment.[10]

A piece of seitan

Commercially packaged seitan
Wheat gluten, also called seitan (pronounced /?se?t?n/), wheat meat, gluten meat, or simply gluten, is a food made from the gluten of wheat. It is made by washing wheat flour dough with water until all the starch dissolves, leaving insoluble gluten as an elastic mass which is then cooked before being eaten.
Wheat gluten, although not as well known, is an alternative to soybean-based meat substitutes such as tofu. Some types of wheat gluten have a chewy and/or stringy texture more like that of meat than most other substitutes. Wheat gluten is often used instead of meat in Asian, vegetarian, Buddhist, and macrobiotic cuisines. Simulated duck is a common use for wheat gluten.
Wheat gluten is most popular in Japan and China, where it was first developed, as well as in the cuisines of other East and Southeast Asian nations. In Asia, it is commonly found on the menus of restaurants catering primarily to Buddhist customers who do not eat meat.
Because it was first popularized in western nations during the second half of the 20th century through its promotion by proponents of the macrobiotic diet, seitan (the name by which it is known in macrobiotic circles) is also the name by which wheat gluten is best known in most English-speaking nations. In the West, prepared wheat gluten is generally available only in Asian markets and health food stores (although gluten flour is commonly available in supermarkets).

Canned fried wheat gluten ("vegetarian mock duck"), product of Taiwan.

Fried wheat gluten ("vegetarian mock duck"), product of Taiwan. Contents of the can above.
Wheat gluten, called mi閯 j?n in Chinese (traditional: ??, simplified: ??, literally "noodle/dough tendon"; also spelled mien chin or mien ching) is believed to have originated in ancient China, as a meat substitute for adherents of Buddhism, particularly some Mahayana Buddhist monks, who are strict vegetarians (see Buddhist cuisine). One story attributes the invention of imitation meat to chefs who made it for Chinese emperors who, traditionally, observed a week of vegetarianism each year (cf., Vegetarian Paradise 2 Menu, New York City[1] and Harmony Restaurant Menu, Philadelphia[2]). Mi閯 j?n is often deep fried before being cooked in Chinese cuisine, which confers a crispy rind that enhances the texture of the gluten.
There are three primary Chinese forms of wheat gluten:
Oily/oil fried gluten (???, y楂 mi閯 j?n): Raw gluten that has been torn into small bits, then deep fried into small puffy balls of around 35cm in diameter and sold as "imitation abalone". They are golden brown in color, and braised or boiled in a savory soup or stew before eating. They are frequently paired with xiang gu (black mushrooms).
Larger fried balls of gluten, called mi閯 j?n qi (???) or mi閯 j?n pao (???), which may be up to 5inches in diameter, are sometimes seen in Asian supermarkets. These are often stuffed with meat or tofu mixtures and served as a dish called "gluten meatballs" (????, Mi閯 j?n ro yu閱) or "gluten stuffed with meat" (????, mi閯 j?n sa? ro).
Steamed gluten (???, zh?ng mi閯 j?n): Raw gluten that has been wrapped around itself to form a long sausage shape which is then steamed. This type of gluten has a dense texture and ranges from off-white to light greenish grey in color. It is torn open into strips before being used as an ingredient in recipes. When this sausage-shaped gluten is thickly sliced into medallions, the resulting form is called mi閯 l榉 (??, literally "gluten wheels"). Larger blocks of steamed gluten are sometimes colored pink and sold as vegetarian "mock ham."
Baked spongy gluten (traditional: ??; simplified: ??; pinyin: k?o f?): Similar in texture to a sponge, kao fu (sometimes labeled in English as "bran puff") is made by leavening raw gluten, then baking or steaming it. These are sold as small blocks in Chinese markets and are then diced up and cooked. This type of gluten absorbs its cooking liquid like a sponge and is enjoyed for its "juicy" character. Chinese kao fu is coarser in texture than its Japanese counterpart, yaki-fu, due to the relatively larger air bubbles it contains. Kao fu is available in fresh, frozen, and canned forms.
Mi閯 j?n is also available in Asian grocery stores in canned and jarred forms, often marinated in combination with peanuts or mushrooms. Such canned and jarred gluten is commonly eaten as an accompaniment to congee (boiled rice porridge) as part of a traditional Chinese breakfast.
Freshly prepared mi閯 j?n can be difficult to find in Chinese...(and so on)

Centerlines are the most common forms of road surface markings, providing separation between traffic moving in opposite directions. This example of a centerline section also shows typical wear and tear, with the material strip frayed at the edges and smudged by tire rubber.
Road surface marking is any kind of device or material that is used on a road surface in order to convey official information.
Road surface markings are used on paved roadways to provide guidance and information to drivers and pedestrians. Uniformity of the markings is an important factor in minimizing confusion and uncertainty about their meaning, and efforts exist to standardise such markings across borders. However, countries and areas categorize and specifiy road surface markings in different ways.
Road surface markings are either mechanical, non-mechanical, or temporary. They can be used to delineate traffic lanes, inform motorists and pedestrians or serve as noise generators when run across a road, or attempt to wake a sleeping driver when installed in the shoulders of a road.
There is continuous effort to improve the road marking system, and technological breakthroughs include adding reflectivity, increasing longevity and lowering installation costs.

History
In the United States, painted white center lines were developed by Edward N. Hines, the chairman of the Wayne County, Michigan, Board of Roads. They were first used on roads in Michigan around 1911.[1]
White center lines were used until 1971. Yellow have been used since[2].
In England, the idea of painting a centre white line was first experimented in 1921 in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham. Following complaints by residents over reckless driving and several collisions, the Sutton Coldfield Corporation decided to paint the line on Maney Corner in the area of Maney.[3]
In 1971, a correspondent for the Sutton Coldfield News wrote an article in the newspaper recalling the event.
The line was put down as an experiment as there were a lot of accidents there, even in the early days of the motor car. The experiment proved to be so successful that the whole country adopted it as a standard road safety device, and later foreign countries put white line on their roads, too.
Mechanical markers
Mechanical devices may be raised or recessed into the road surface, and either reflective or non-reflective. Most are permanent; some are movable.
Botts' dots (low rounded white dots), named for the California Caltrans engineer, Elbert Botts who invented the epoxy that keeps them glued down, are one type of a mechanical non-reflective raised marker. Generally they are used to mark the edges of traffic lanes, frequently in conjunction with raised reflective markers.[citation needed] Botts' dots are also used across a travel lane to draw the drivers attention to the road. They are frequently used in this way to alert drivers to toll booths, school zones or other significant reduction of speed limit. They are normally only used in warm climates since snow plows usually remove them along with the snow.
Rumble strips are commonly used for the same purpose. A rumble strip can be a series of simple troughs (typically 1 cm deep and 10 cm wide) that is ground out of the asphalt. Other alternatives, similar to the Botts' dots, use raised strips, painted or glued to the surface. Uses can be across the travel direction (to warn of hazards ahead) or along the travel direction (to warn of hazards of not staying within a specific lane).[4] Their main way of function is creating a strong vibration when driven over that will alert a driver to various upcoming hazards both by sound and the physical vibration of his vehicle.
Reflective markers are used as travel lane dividers, to mark the central reservation (median) or to mark exit slip-roads. Incorporating a raised retro-reflective element, they are typically more visible at night and in inclement weather than standard road marking lines. The color of markers varies depending on the country of use. Reflective markers are also referred to as Raised Pavement Markers, Road Studs, and sometimes (generically) in the UK & Ireland as cat's eye, although this name refers to one particular brand of product.[citation needed] These markers can be used for other purposes such as marking the locations of fire hydrants (blue) or at gates of gated communities to indicate that emergency service vehicles have a...(and so on)
