A heating pad is a pad used for warming of parts of the body in order to manage pain. Localized application of heat causes the blood vessels in that area to dilate, enhancing perfusion to the targeted tissue. Types of heating pads include electrical, chemical and hot water bottles.

Types
Electrical
Electric pads usually operate from household current and must have protection against overheating.
A moist heating pad is used dry on the user's skin. These pads register temperatures from 170 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit (76 to 82 鐧) and are intended for deep tissue treatment and can be dangerous if left on unattended. Moist heating pads are used mainly by physical therapists but can be found for home use. A moist cloth can be added with a stupe cover to add more moisture to the treatment.
The inventor of the heating pad is credited to Maxwell Stephenson, however a man by the name of Simon Brown actually created the electrical elements that are conventionally used in 90% of all electrical heating pads.
Chemical
Chemical pads employ a chemical heat reservoir or a one-time chemical reaction such as catalyzed rusting of iron.

A sodium acetate heat pad
A sodium acetate heat pad is a reusable heat reservoir. It contains a supersaturated solution of sodium acetate (NaCH3COO). Crystallization is triggered by flexing a small flat disc of notched ferrous metal embedded in the liquid. Pressing the disc releases very tiny adhered crystals of sodium acetate[1] into the solution which then act as nucleation sites for the recrystallization of the remainder of the salt solution. Because the liquid is supersaturated, this makes the solution crystallize suddenly, thereby releasing the energy of the crystal lattice. The use of the metal disc was invented in 1978. [2]
See sodium acetate for a more technical discussion.
The pad can be reused by placing it in boiling water for 10-15 minutes, which redissolves the sodium acetate in the contained water and recreates a supersaturated solution. Once the pad has returned to room temperature it can be triggered again. Triggering the pad before it has reached room temperature results in the pad reaching a lower peak temperature, as compared to waiting until it had completely cooled.
High specific-heat capacity materials
Heating packs can also be made by filling a container with a material that has a high specific heat capacity, which then gradually releases the heat over time. A hot water bottle is the most familiar example of this type of heating pad.
A microwavable heating pad is a heating pad that is warmed by placing it in a microwave oven before use. Microwavable heating pads are typically made out of a thick insulative fabric such as flannel and filled with grains such as buckwheat or flax seed. Due to their relative simplicity to make, they are frequently sewn by hand, often with a custom shape to fit the intended area of use. In rare instances, these types of pads have been known to ignite during or after the microwave process and cause fires.
Often, aromatic compounds will also be added to the filler mixture to create a pleasant or soothing smell when heated. The source of these can vary significantly, ranging from adding essential oils to ground up spices such as cloves and nutmeg, or even dried rose petals.
Phase change materials
Main article: Phase Change Material
Phase change materials can be used for heating pads intended to operate at a fixed temperature. The heat of fusion is used to release the thermal energy.
Function
Many episodes of pain come from muscle exertion or strain, which creates tension in the muscles and soft tissues. This tension can constrict circulation, sending pain signals to the brain. Heat application eases pain by:
dilating the blood vessels surrounding the painful area. Increased blood flow provides additional oxygen and nutrients to help heal the damaged muscle tissue.
stimulating sensation in the skin and therefore decreasing the pain signals being transmitted to the brain
increasing the flexibility (and decreasing painful stiffness) of soft tissues surrounding the injured area, including muscles and connective tissue.
As many heating pads are portable, heat may be applied as needed at home, at work, or while traveling. Some physicians recommend alternating heat and ice for pain relief. As with any pain treatment, a physician should be consulted prior to beginning treatment.

Lingerie tape, also known as cleavage tape, fashion tape and tit tape, is a double-sided adhesive tape, used to secure the edges of a strapless dress or top to the cleavage or side of the breasts or on shoulders to secure bra straps from slipping, in order to keep the item of clothing in place and to avoid a wardrobe malfunction. It may also be referred to as toupee tape or wig tape, a similar double-sided tape intended for a different function (securing a hairpiece).

"Scallywag" redirects here. For the defunct satirical magazine see Scallywag (magazine)
Scally or Scallie, is originally short for Scallywag, but is now most-often used in the context of fashion-conscious hooligans.[1] It is a slang term for a social subculture youth, similar to "chav", but with different origins. The term is used across the UK, predominantly in the north-west of England and particularly in Liverpool and Manchester to describe mostly young, working class people.[2][3]
Often romanticised through TV programmes like Brookside and Bread, the word 'scally' during the 1970s and 1980s meant someone who was a pioneer in fashion trends, and someone who was resourceful beyond his means with limited resources to begin with. During the 1990s the term started to be used to describe a yob or a hooligan or scally wag.

Etymology
The word's origins lie in Irish language. It is short for scallywag[4], which comes from an old Irish word for drudge or farmservant sgaileog. It is a word which appears to be in common use within towns that have historic Irish communities, for example Salford, Warrington, Knowsley, St. Helens and Liverpool, where it is sometimes abbreviated to "scall". As one leaves the industrial belt of the Mersey and Irwell Valleys the word appears to have been replaced by chav.
Differences between the scally and the chav
The scally has a much more diverse and detailed history. In terms of stereotypical dress, scallies today (particularly in Liverpool) often wear designer tracksuits and trainers (Nike Air Max and Reebok Classics in particular). They also wear dark coloured clothing usually black, navy blue and grey. Although fashion trends differ even between areas as close as Liverpool and Chester or Manchester and Bolton. This is in contrast to the chav's stereotypical counterfeit Burberry outfits and excessive 鎻祃ing jewellery
The evolution of the scally
1970s
Although the adoration of brand name clothing stems from the Northern Soul scene, it is generally regarded that the first scallies were supporters of Liverpool FC who stood on the Anfield Road Terrace end of their football stadium. The earliest occurrence of this new fashion trend was evident in the Spring of 1977 where Adidas Samba footwear and Adidas t-shirts became en vogue with the Liverpool youth.
By the August 1977 Charity Shield game between Liverpool and Manchester United Liverpool fans were noticeable with their new look- compared to Mancunians and Londoners who still dressed in the typical airwear 1970s look accompanied by wearing the respective colours of their teams.
Young Liverpool entrepreneur Robert Wade Smith then an employee for a Liverpool department store noticed the endless demand for sports footwear in Liverpool which at one time outsold London by three to one. Smith decided to open his own store and hired a van to bring back rare sportswear from Europe which were difficult to buy in the UK. Wade Smith is now closed down.
By the 1980s the 'Liverpool look' (it was rarely called scally back then) went overground and its 'look' was fed by travelling football fans who returned from Everton and Liverpool games in Europe with designer sports goods.
1980s
1981 also saw the Toxteth riots in Liverpool and the economy stagnated and fuelled high levels of unemployment. All these factors along with Liverpool fans becoming bloated on success saw Anfield attendances for football games drop. It also was the beginning of the end for the Liverpool scally. With the rest of the UK following the new trends now almost religiously and economic factors making expensive sportswear purchases illogical Liverpool abandoned the scally scene and began to 'dress down' with a scruffy look.
Typical of the contradictions that are associated with the scally during the 1980s was their penchant for golf (due to the brand name clothing that pervades the sport) and several 1970s supergroups notably Genesis and Pink Floyd.[1] Names, which can still be spotted as fading graffiti on Liverpool walls today .
During the 1980s the TV Character Damon Grant from Brookside came to epitomise the Scally of this era.
1990s
The 1990s saw a pivotal change in the characteristics of the scally with national re-invention through the comedy sketches by Harry Enfield. His tracksuit-wearing characters "The Scousers", with their phrases such as "calm down, calm down!" and "eh, eh, eh!", gave the scally a perhaps unwelcome national media exposure that, ironically, the Liverpool youth began to imitate.

Description
The Paulding Light appears to hover and move along a power line right of way. The colors shift continuously - red and white are the most common although green and blue have been reported. It does not appear every night and the fullness and brightness of the moon has no effect on whether it will appear or not.[citation needed]
History
While the story surrounding the phenomenon asserts that the lights have been visible since the start of the twentieth century, the first documented sighting was by a group of teenagers in 1966.[citation needed]
Analysis
Several amateur studies have been conducted, all of them concluding that the lights are the result of the mid-1960s rerouting of US 45, giving the viewing spot a slightly angled view of sporadic traffic along the new highway. The colors then match headlights, tail lights, and the warning lights of the occasional emergency vehicle.[1][2]

History
The School, originally known as Holy Spirit School, was founded by the Maryknoll Sisters, an American religious order, on 10 January 1927 in Hong Kong. Back then, the school was on Robinson Road in Central Mid-levels. There were only 8 classes of students sharing four tiny classrooms. In the 1930s, the school moved to a slightly larger building in Caine Road. There were seven classrooms, but conditions were still cramped by today鎶 standards. By 1941, the school was offering a complete course leading to matriculation, and so was one of only a small handful of schools at that time which prepared girls for university.
Marymount School Song
O Marymount, my Marymount,
Thou Beacon of the truth,
O glorious the vision bright,
That guides the steps of youth!
To Thee we pledge our loyalty,
O School we love so well,
We live to love and follow Thee,
O Alma Mater True,
We live to love and follow Thee,
Our pledge we now renew.
O Marymount, my Marymount,
How wonderful Thine aim,
High virtue, wisdom, precious flower,
Thy seal to all proclaim,
To Mary our most cherished boast,
Our school sweet model fair,
We pledge our word to honour Thee,
O Alma Mater True,
We pledge our word to honour Thee,
Our hearts do thou renew.
In 1941, Japanese forces invaded and occupied Hong Kong. The school was closed until 1948. When the school reopened, Hong Kong was facing a new challenge as many thousands of immigrants were pouring across the border to escape the civil war on the mainland. Marymount rose to this challenge by offering places to as many girls as it could.
As the school continued to expand, a new building with better facilities became necessary. In October 1957, the school moved to its present location on the wooded slopes at the top of Blue Pool Road, overlooking Happy Valley. At the same time, it was renamed Maryknoll Sisters School. Initially, the building housed both Secondary and Primary Sections, but in 1961 the Primary School was relocated to the premises at Tai Hang Road, directly above the secondary school. During the school year 1978-79, the Maryknoll Sisters handed over the sponsorship of the school to the Columban Sisters.
In September 1983, the name of the school was changed to Marymount. Throughout its history the school campus had also been home to a convent, with the nun鎶 dormitories housed on the fourth floor and the site of the library originally being a chapel. It was only in 1993 that the nuns vacated their premises in order to make more room for the ever-growing student population.
In 1991, Mrs. Nancy Wong became the school鎶 first Chinese principal, and the first principal who was not a member of a religious order. In 1996, the Columban Sisters initiated the transfer of the sponsorship of the school to the Christian Life Community(CLC), the process of which was completed by September 1997. The CLC is an international Catholic lay community with a keen interest in education and commitment to the service of youth, and which receives spiritual guidance from the Jesuits of Wah Yan College, Hong Kong. The CLC has pledged to preserve the same school spirit, foster the traditions and continue to provide quality education at Marymount.
Mrs. Wong oversaw the school鎶 transition from being managed by the Columban sisters to being managed by the World Christian Life Community. The CLC is a Catholic lay community which works to support education and the needs of young people,
The Secondary School operated up to 29 classes with over 1000 students until 1998, offering arts, science and social disciplines up to Form 7. With the restructuring of the school, the total number of classes is at 26 by the 2003. The Primary School operates 24 classes and has about 900 students.
In 2003 Mrs. Wong retired after 36 years of devoted service to Marymount, and the school welcomed its current principal, Ms. Veronica Ma.

Security printing is the field of the printing industry that deals with the printing of items such as banknotes, passports, tamper-evident labels, stock certificates, postage stamps and identity cards. The main goal of security printing is to prevent forgery, tampering, or counterfeiting.
A number of technical methods are used in the security printing industry.

Special paper
Most banknotes are made of heavy paper, almost always from cotton fibres for strength and durability, in some cases linen or speciality coloured or forensic fibres are added to give the paper added individuality and protect against counterfeiting. Some countries including Romania, Mexico, New Zealand, Israel, Singapore and Australia produce banknotes made from polymer, in order to improve wear and tear, and permit the inclusion of a small transparent window a few millimeters in size as a security feature that is very difficult to reproduce using common counterfeiting techniques.
Watermarks
A watermark is a recognizable image or pattern in paper that appears lighter or darker than surrounding paper when viewed with a light from behind the paper, due to paper density variations. A watermark is made by impressing a water coated metal stamp or dandy roll onto the paper during manufacturing. Watermarks were first introduced in Bologna, Italy in 1282; as well as their use in security printing, they have also been used by papermakers to identify their product.
Intaglio printing
Intaglio is a printing technique in which the image is incised into a surface. Normally, copper or zinc plates are used, and the incisions are created by etching or engraving the image, but one may also use mezzotint. In printing, the surface is covered in ink, and then rubbed vigorously with tarlatan cloth or newspaper to remove the ink from the surface, leaving it in the incisions. A damp piece of paper is placed on top, and the plate and paper are run through a printing press that, through pressure, transfers the ink to the paper.
The very sharp printing obtained from the intaglio process is hard to imitate by other means. Intaglio also allows for the creation of latent images which are only visible when the document is viewed at a very shallow angle.
Geometric lathe work
A guilloch is an ornamental pattern formed of two or more curved bands that interlace to repeat a circular design. They are made with a geometric lathe.
Microprinting
This involves the use of extremely small text, and is most often used on currency and bank checks. The text is generally small enough to be undiscernable to the naked eye. Cheques, for example, use microprint as the signature line.
Color-changing inks
Color changing inks are chemicals that change color when viewed at a different angle. The color of the ink does not actually change, but the angle of the light to the viewer's eye changes and thus creates the change in color. Currently there are only three types, green to purple, gold to green and green to lilac.
Holograms
A hologram may be embedded either via holographic paper, or onto the laminate of a card itself.
Security threads
There are two kinds of security threads. One is a thin aluminum coated and partly demetalized Polyester film thread with Micro printing which is embedded in the security paper as banknote or passport paper.
The other kind of security thread is the single or multicolor sewing thread made from cotton or synthetic fibers, mostly UV fluorescent, for the bookbinding of passport booklets.
Magnetic ink
Because of the difficulties in forging magnetic ink characters, and the speed with which they can be read by computer systems, magnetic ink character recognition is used extensively in banking, primarily for personal checks. The ink used in Magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) technology is also used to greatly reduce errors in automated (or computerized) reading.
Serial numbers
Serial numbers are not difficult to forge, but make legitimate documents easier to track and audit.
Anti-copying marks
In the late twentieth century advances in computer and photocopy technology made it possible for people without sophisticated training to easily copy currency. In an attempt to prevent this, banks...(and so on)

In-line spinner lure with ring, dish, body/weight and hook
In terms of recreational fishing, a lure is an object attached to the end of the fishing line and designed to resemble and move like an item of fish prey. The purpose of the lure is to use movement, vibrations, and color to catch the fish's attention to make them bite the hook. Lures are equipped with one or more single, double, or treble hooks that are used to hook fish when they attack the lure.
Lures are usually used with a fishing rod and fishing reel outfit. When a lure is used for casting, it is continually cast out and retrieved, the retrieve making the lure swim. A skilled angler can explore many possible hiding places for fish through lure casting.

History
The fishing lure has been around since the caveman. They were first made out of bone and bronze. The Chinese and Egyptian used fishing rods, hooks, and lines as early as 2,000B.C. The first hooks were made out bronze which was strong but still very thin and less visible to the fish. The Chinese were the first to make fishing line, spun from fine silk. The modern fishing lure was made commercially in the United States in the early 1900's by the firm of Heddon and Pflueger in Michigan. Before this time most fishing lures were made by individual craftsman. Commercial-made lures were based on the same ideas that the individual craftsmen were making but on a larger scale.[1]
Methods
The fishing lure is tied with a knot onto the fishing line which is connected to the reel. The reel is attached to a rod. The motion is of the lure is made by winding line back on to the reel, by sweeping the fishing rod, jigging movements with the fishing rod, or by being pulled behind a moving boat ("trolling"). An exception are artificial flies, commonly called flies by fly fishers, which either float on the water surface, slowly sink or float underwater, and represent some form of fish food.
Types
There are many types of fishing lures. They are all moved to different ways to resemble prey for the fish. The different lures are made to look like dying fish and fast moving fish. They include the following types:
A jig is a weighted hook with a lead head opposite the sharp tip. They are often covered with a minnow of crawfish or even a plastic worm to get the fish's attention. The operator has to move the rod to get the jig to move.
Surface lures are also known as top water lures, they float and resemble prey that is on top of the water.
Spoon lures are made to resemble the inside of a diner spoon. They are thin and flashy to attract fish.
Plugs (fishing) are also known as crankbaits. These lures have a fishlike body shape and they are run through the water where they make sideways trembling moves caused by instability due to the scoop under the head.
artificial flies are designed to resemble all manner of fish prey and are used with a fly rod and reel in fly fishing.
Bass worms are made out of plastic or rubber and are made to resemble worms and lizards in the water.
Spinnerbait are pieces of wire bent at a 90 degree angle with a hook on one end and a flashy spinner mechanism on the other end.
These fishing lures can be made out of wood, plastic, rubber, metal and cork. They can have many moving parts and also no moving parts. They can be retrieved fast or slow. Some of the lures can be used by themselves or with another lure.
One advantage of use of artificial lures is a reduction in use of bait. This contributes to resolving one of the marine environments more pressing problems, that being the undermining of marine food webs by overharvesting "bait" species which tend to occur lower in the food chain http://www.seafriends.org.nz/issues/fishing/pauly1.htm. Another advantage of lures is that their use promotes improved survival of fish during catch and release fishing. This is because lures reduce the incidence of deep hooking which has been correlated to fish mortality in many studies http://www.info-fish.net/releasefish/files/26/Hooking.pdf. Mortality by swallowing hooks is mostly caused by the handling stress and damage trying to get the hook out of the gut or throat. The best thing to do when a fish is gut hooked is leave the hook and cut the line as soon as possible. Hooks will then be encapsulated or evacuated from the body. Use of non corrosive steel is not recommended because a corrosive hook will be easier to discard for the fish.
Daisy chain
A daisy chain is a "chain" of plastic lures, however they do not have hooks - their main purpose is to merely attract a school of fish closer to the lures with hooks.[2]
Typically, the main line of the daisy chain is clear monofilament line with crimped on droppers...(and so on)

A line-up of vehicles modeled after Herbie at a VW rally at Stanford Hall, UK
Herbie is an anthropomorphic Volkswagen Beetle, which is featured in several Disney motion pictures starting with the 1969 film The Love Bug. In the franchise, the car has a mind of its own and is capable of driving itself, and is a serious contender in auto racing competitions. Throughout most of the franchise, Herbie is distinguished by red, white and blue racing stripes from front to back bumper and a racing-style number "53" on the front hood, doors, and engine lid. One exception to this is his introduction in The Love Bug, where he initially appears as a nondescript white vehicle with a grey-colored fabric sunroof (a.k.a. "ragtop"), the style of sunroof offered on VW Beetles made in 1963.

Origin
The first Herbie film, The Love Bug, was based on the story Car, Boy, Girl written by Gordon Buford in 1961.[1] In The Love Bug, the car is named by mechanic Tennessee Steinmetz (Buddy Hackett) after his uncle "Herb", who was a middleweight boxer. Steinmetz' uncle had a perpetually broken nose which resembled the front of a Volkswagen Beetle.[2]
Story of Herbie

A Herbie replica, built by a fan.
Herbie's origins are firmly established in The Love Bug. Before being passed to down-on-his-luck race car driver, Jim Douglas (Dean Jones), Herbie was bought by San Francisco socialite Mrs. Van Luit for her upstairs maid. However, Herbie was returned the following day, because the maid had been having problems with him. Douglas has an earnest appreciation for what he deems "a decent piece of machinery" and eventually purchases the unassuming "little car."
In Herbie Rides Again, after several successful races with Herbie, Douglas decides to enter foreign racing circuit, while his mechanic friend Tennessee is residing in Tibet to help his ailing guru. Before Tennessee departs, he leaves Herbie in the care of his great aunt, the widowed Mrs. Steinmetz (Helen Hayes).
By Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, Douglas returns from Europe and enters Herbie in the Trans-France Race, stretching from Paris to Monte Carlo. This time around, Douglas recruits mechanic friend Wheeley Applegate (Don Knotts) to assist, particularly when lovesick Herbie falls "hood over wheels" in love with a Lancia Scorpion named Giselle. Unfortnately, Giselle is driving by competitive female driver Diane (Julie Sommars). Herbie also finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time when the stolen Etoile de Joie diamond is stashed in his gas tank.
In Herbie Goes Bananas, Douglas has decided to retire from racing after the Monte Carlo race and pass Herbie onto his nephew, Pete Stancheck (Stephen W. Burns). Stancheck has plans to enter Herbie in the Brazil Grand Primeo, based in Mexico. In the interim, Herbie befriends an orphan named Paco, and together, wreak havoc onboard cruise ship the Sun Princess, resulting in overzealous ship Captain Blythe (Harvey Korman) to force Herbie to "walk the plank." Herbie is dropped into the sea, becomes a rustbucket as a result of immersion in the salt water, and is eventually rescued by Paco and disguised as a taxi. The two stop a gang of con artistes from stealing ancient Inca gold. Paco gives Herbie the nickname "Ocho", the Spanish word for the number 8, purportedly because the digits 5 and 3 in Herbie's racing number, 53 were added together (5+3=8). At the end of the film Paco says, "Five and three are eight, anyone knows that."
After the Mexico debacle, Douglas takes Herbie back and opens a driving school in Herbie the Matchmaker.
Herbie then passed from owner to owner until he was bought by Maggie Payton in Herbie: Fully Loaded.

For other uses, see Still Life (disambiguation).

William Harnett, The Old Violin (1886)
A still life (plural still lifes [1]) is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on) in an artificial setting. With origins in ancient times and most popular in Western art since the 17th century, still life paintings give the artist more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition than do paintings of other types of subjects such as landscape or portraiture. Still life paintings, particularly before 1700, often contained religious and allegorical symbolism relating to the objects depicted. Some modern still life breaks the two-dimensional barrier and employs three-dimensional mixed media, and uses found objects, photography, computer graphics, as well as video and sound.

Ancient antecedents

Transparent bowl of fruit and vases. Roman wall painting in Pompeii (around 70 AD)
Still life paintings often adorn the interior of ancient Egyptian tombs. It was believed that food objects and other items depicted there would, in the afterlife, become real and available for use by the deceased. Ancient Greek vase paintings also demonstrate great skill in depicting everyday objects and animals. Similar still life, more simply decorative in intent, but with realistic perspective, have also been found in the Roman wall paintings and floor mosaics unearthed at Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Villa Boscoreale, including the later familiar motif of a glass bowl of fruit. Decorative mosaics termed 鎻簃blema, found in the homes of rich Romans, demonstrated the range of food enjoyed by the upper classes, and also functioned as signs of hospitality and as celebrations of the seasons and of life.[2] By the 16th century, food and flowers would again appear as symbols of the seasons and of the five senses. Also starting in Roman times is the tradition of the use of the skull in paintings as a symbol of mortality and earthly remains, often with the accompanying phrase Omnia mors aequat (Death makes all equal).[3] These vanitas images have been re-interpreted through the last 400 years of art history, starting with Dutch painters around 1600.[4]
The popular appreciation of the realism of still life painting is related in the ancient Greek legend of Zeuxis and Parrhasius, who are said to have once competed to create the most life-like objects, history鎶 earliest descriptions of trompe l鎶〆il painting.[5] As Pliny the Elder recorded in ancient Roman times, Greek artists centuries earlier were already advanced in the arts of portrait painting and still life. He singled out Peiraikos, 鎼榟ose artistry is surpassed by only a very few鍖焑 painted barbershops and shoemakers stalls, donkeys, vegetables, and such, and for that reason came to be called the 鎲刟inter of vulgar subjects; yet these works are altogether delightful, and they were sold at higher prices than the greatest [paintings] of many other artists.鎿/br> Middle Ages and Renaissance
By 1300, starting with Giotto and his pupils, still life painting was revived in the form of fictional niches on religious wall paintings which depicted everyday objects.[7] Through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, still life in Western art remained primarily an adjunct to Christian religious subjects, and convened religious and allegorical meaning. This was particularly true in the work of Northern European artists, whose fascination with highly detailed optical realism and symbolism led them to lavish great attention on their paintings' overall message.[8] Painters like Jan van Eyck often used still life elements as part of an iconographic program.
The development of oil painting technique by Jan van Eyck and other Northern European artists made it possible to paint everyday objects in this hyper-realistic fashion, owing to the slow drying, mixing, and layering qualities of oil colors.[9] Among the first to break free of religious meaning were Leonardo da Vinci, who created watercolor studies of fruit (around 1495) as part of his restless examination of nature, and Albrecht D榛礶r who also made precise drawings of flora and fauna.[10]
Petrus Christus portrait of a bride and groom visiting a goldsmith is a typical example of a transitional still life depicting both religious and secular content. Though mostly allegorical in message, the figures of the couple are realistic and the objects shown...(and so on)

Chuck Taylor All-Stars

Miscellaneous Converse shoes
Chuck Taylor All-Stars, or Converse All-Stars, also referred to as "Chuck's"[1] ' are canvas and rubber shoes produced by Converse. They were first produced in 1917 as the "All-Star," Converse's attempt to capture the basketball shoe market. They were not particularly popular until basketball player Chuck Taylor adopted them as his preferred shoe. He was impressed with the design so he became the shoe's leading salesman. After proposing a few changes to the shoe, the shoe got its current name and Chuck Taylor's signature on its ankle patch. Although classic black is the most popular, Chuck Taylor was himself known to prefer unbleached white high-tops (known in his day as simply "white").
Consumers demanded more variety from the shoe - particularly with respect to colors in order to match basketball teams - so colored and patterned shoelaces became popular to complement the two colors, black and white, available before 1966. Afterwards, more colors and styles became available. Low-top or "Oxford", high-top, and later knee-high, versions were produced. More materials were offered for the construction, including leather, suede, vinyl, denim, and hemp. Some versions of the shoe were offered without laces, held up instead by elastic. These new versions of the shoe were also co-designed by Chuck Taylor, just before his death in 1969.
A full biography of Chuck Taylor was published by Indiana University Press in March 2006 under the title Chuck Taylor, All Star: The True Story of the Man Behind the Most Famous Athletic Shoe in History, with a foreword by the retired college basketball coach Dean Smith.
When Converse was bought by Nike and operations were moved from the United States to overseas, the design saw a few alterations. The fabric is no longer 2-ply cotton canvas but 1-ply "textile" and many wearers have noticed different patterns of wear.
The shoes are available in several core colors, seasonal colors, and a variety of print styles. In the 1950s the shoes became popular within the greaser subculture and amongst many fans of rockabilly. Fans of punk rock have adopted the shoe as a fashion trend since the late 1970s and many popular punk rock bands, such as the Ramones, have supported the trend by wearing the sneakers. All-Stars became popular again in the '90s grunge culture, when Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain started wearing them. Especially in the early '90s days of G-funk.

Popularity
Despite the major setbacks for Converse in recent times[citation needed], the Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star is the most successful shoe in history, and has enjoyed recent popularity thanks to a resurgence of old school trends. By the turn of the 21st century, over 750 million pairs had been sold worldwide. They no longer seem to be worn by their original target market of basketball players (at least not in the professional sphere) who have moved on to more modern shoes, but instead they are now marketed to the mainstream teenager. Some are so enthusiastic about the sneakers that they have a vast, ever-growing collection.
One other place in which the shoe is quite popular is in the sport of powerlifting, where the flat soles of the shoe make for a more stable base than normal styles of sneakers whose heel is usually thicker than the toe of the shoe, and which often have cushioning that absorbs and therefore wastes some of the force exerted to move the weight. Many powerlifters state the lack of elevation in the heel provides better support during squats and deadlifts. Moreover, the lack of elevation reduces the range of motion during the deadlift, often allowing more weight to be lifted by shortening the distance the barbell must be moved.[citation needed]
Chuck Taylors and Fashion
Chuck Taylors saw another upswing in popularity in 1990. Some may attribute this growing trend to a higher awareness of such fashions as grunge - an outgrowth of some of the same rock-oriented youth cultures that have kept an affinity for the shoes since (at least) the late '70s/early '80s punk and new wave eras.
The recent increases in numbers of colours may also have led to the market for Chuck Taylors growing, due to various owner- or factory-based customizations of the shoe through color, use of stylized shoelaces, and through drawing or writing on the rubberized parts. The customization of Chuck Taylors is highly popular with the rock scene, especially, but not limited to, teenage girls, with many drawing/writing on the shoes, putting mismatching laces in the shoes, or wearing odd shoes (often two differently coloured Chuck Taylors) - all styles fairly common among wearers of the shoes over the past three decades. However, the original trend of wearing the...(and so on)

Oil power plant in Iraq
A power station (also referred to as a generating station, power plant, or powerhouse) is an industrial facility for the generation of electric power.[1][2][3]
Power plant is also used to refer to the engine in ships, aircraft and other large vehicles. Some prefer to use the term energy center because it more accurately describes what the plants do, which is the conversion of other forms of energy, like chemical energy, gravitational potential energy or heat energy into electrical energy. However, power plant is the most common term in the U.S., while elsewhere power station and power plant are both widely used, power station prevailing in many Commonwealth countries and especially in the United Kingdom.
At the center of nearly all power stations is a generator, a rotating machine that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy by creating relative motion between a magnetic field and a conductor. The energy source harnessed to turn the generator varies widely. It depends chiefly on which fuels are easily available and on the types of technology that the power company has access to.

Thermal power stations

Rotor of a modern steam turbine, used in power station
Main article: Thermal power station
In thermal power stations, mechanical power is produced by a heat engine that transforms thermal energy, often from combustion of a fuel, into rotational energy. Most thermal power stations produce steam, and these are sometimes called steam power stations. Not all thermal energy can be transformed into mechanical power, according to the second law of thermodynamics. Therefore, there is always heat lost to the environment. If this loss is employed as useful heat, for industrial processes or district heating, the power plant is referred to as a cogeneration power plant or CHP (combined heat-and-power) plant. In countries where district heating is common, there are dedicated heat plants called heat-only boiler stations. An important class of power stations in the Middle East uses by-product heat for the desalination of water.

480 megawatt GE H series power generation gas turbine
Thermal power plants are classified by the type of fuel and the type of prime mover installed.
By fuel
Nuclear power plants[4] use a nuclear reactor's heat to operate a steam turbine generator.
Fossil fuelled power plants may also use a steam turbine generator or in the case of natural gas fired plants may use a combustion turbine.
Geothermal power plants use steam extracted from hot underground rocks.
Renewable energy plants may be fuelled by waste from sugar cane, municipal solid waste, landfill methane, or other forms of biomass.
In integrated steel mills, blast furnace exhaust gas is a low-cost, although low-energy-density, fuel.
Waste heat from industrial processes is occasionally concentrated enough to use for power generation, usually in a steam boiler and turbine.
Solar thermal electric plants use sunlight to boil water, which turns the generator.
By prime mover
Steam turbine plants use the dynamic pressure generated by expanding steam to turn the blades of a turbine. Almost all large non-hydro plants use this system.
Gas turbine plants use the dynamic pressure from flowing gases to directly operate the turbine. Natural-gas fuelled turbine plants can start rapidly and so are used to supply "peak" energy during periods of high demand, though at higher cost than base-loaded plants. These may be comparatively small units, and sometimes completely unmanned, being remotely operated. This type was pioneered by the UK, Princetown[5] being the world's first, commissioned in 1959.
Combined cycle plants have both a gas turbine fired by natural gas, and a steam boiler and steam turbine which use the exhaust gas from the gas turbine to produce electricity. This greatly increases the overall efficiency of the plant, and many new baseload power plants are combined cycle plants fired by natural gas.
Internal combustion Reciprocating engines are used to provide power for isolated communities and are frequently used for small cogeneration plants. Hospitals, office buildings, industrial plants, and other critical facilities also use them to...(and so on)
