History
The first glassmaking kiln was fired up in Vysok nad Jizerou in 1376. In 1576 individual glassmakers combined resources to create the first glassmaking factory in M?eno nad Nisou. In 1711 the Fi?er brothers bring the secrets of crystal cutting and polishing to northern Bohemia. In 1724 first factory specialized in manufacturing and export of crystal chandeliers was established in Pr閱昲e? near Kamenicky ?enov. Czech chandeliers were ordered for the Royal Courts - Versailles and Fontainebleau palaces of Louis XV, Sultan Osman III of the Ottoman Empire, and Empress Elizabeth of Russia. In 1743 Czech Mastercraftsmen create chandelier in honour of the coronation of Empress Maria Theresa. In 1905 Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria and King of Bohemia officially visits the glassmakers of Jablonec nad Nisou. The Preciosa brand name was first registered in Bohemia in 1915. Since 1918 cutting and polishing of stones, beads, and chandelier trimmings are added to the crystal production repertoire. In 1945 the seven main crystal factories in and around Jablonec nad Nisou merged together, forming the Preciosa Group. Preciosa company was officially established on April 10th, 1948.[1]
In 1990 subsidiary company Preciosa Chandeliers, Ltd was established. In 1994 the third subsidiary company Preciosa Figurky, s.r.o. was formed in the Preciosa Group.[2]
Brand name and logo
The word Preciosa is derived from the Latin adjective precious meaning precious, rare, or noble.
All sculptures and jewelry are marked with a logo. The Preciosa logo is created by a graphically stylised motif of the glass stone with reflection, which has the character of a graphical symbol - logo and logotype of PRECIOSA.[3]
Products
Preciosa crystal contains approximately 30% lead to maximize refraction. The Preciosa production range includes crystal sculptures and miniatures, jewelry, home decor and chandeliers.
In order to create a crystal that allows light to refract in a rainbow spectrum, Preciosa coats some of its crystals with special metallic chemical coatings. Aurora Borealis, or "AB", is one of the most popular coatings, and gives the surface a rainbow oil slick appearance. Other coatings include Aurora Borealis Jet, Velvet, Blond Flare, Aurum, Monte Carlo, Capri Gold, Apricot Marea, Volcano, Vitrail Light, Vitrail medium, Vitrail Green, Sahara, Bermuda Blue, Heliotrope, Blue Flare, Labrador, Silver Flare and Hematite.
In 2008 Preciosa started production of Cubic Zirconia.
Public activities
Preciosa was an official national partner of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 and designed and made crystal trophies received by winners together with medals.[4]
